Deadbolt Door Locks
Doors are obviously are main access into, and out of our property but they may also
provide access to unwanted visitors such as intruders or burglars. How do we prevent
burglars from gaining access and how do we secure our doors? By fitting quality
deadbolt door locks we will keep our properties safe and protected.
A standard doorknob type lock is easy to manipulate and offers little protection.
For more substantial protection, fit a deadbolt lock. These offer great protection
against burglars who try to break in to our properties through the doors.
There are 3 types of deadbolt available on the market. The first type is the single
cylinder deadbolt lock. It has a knob on one side and a key cylinder on the other
side. The second type of deadbolt lock is the double cylinder lock. The difference
with this type is that both of its sides have a key cylinder and it has no door
knob. The person needs always needs a key to open it. The third type of deadbolt
lock is the keyless deadbolt lock.
Deadlock bolts that are manufactured in the US are graded by their ability to withstand
an attack. They are generally graded from grade 3 to grade 1. Grade 3 is the least
secure. These gradings are governed by the American National Standards Institute
(ANSI). However, many locks that are imported from other countries may not be graded
at all. Others have different grading schemes a may not be tested. To avoid confusion,
consult a professional locksmith for advice.
The following are the minimum criteria for a deadlock:
- A solid metal tapered outside housing
- A 1 inch bolt throw
- A pin tumbler type locking mechanism
- Solid bolt that should contain a hardened roll pin to resist sawing
- A reinforced strike plate with long enough screws that is fastened to the underlying support framing
In the 1970’s it was discovered that normal traditional steel locks could be easily
"bumped". For this reason, deadbolt door locks were developed to provide far stronger
protection. If your home is prone to burglary and you require a high level of security
then consider purchasing deadbolts which have two or more cylinders.
