External Home Security Measures

It is vital nowadays to have home security measures in place and this starts with measures that are external to your property. The first line of defence to an intruder gaining entry onto your land is the external area around your home.

If you have passageways or entry ways around your home then you must take the necessary steps to secure these. Burglars prey on properties that are easy to break into and this includes properties that provide very easy access to such as passageways. Consider fitting high gating that is lockable and make sure only a select few have the key. You may have to consult with your neighbors but this will also benefit them too so its worth having a chat with them.

Consider your outbuildings, garden sheds and garages. Most people have valuable items stored in these such as power tools, gardening equipment and the like. These will need protecting from theft so be sure you fit highly secure locks and always make sure you lock them. This is extremely important if you keep ladders in your outside buildings. It is very common for a thief to break into a shed to use the ladders and tools to break into the house. They will use a ladder to gain access to an open window upstairs. Thieves travel light so they will use whatever they find on your property to break into your house.

It is a fact that nearly sixty percent of all burglaries occur when it is dark. To you will need to install external security lighting to deter the thief from wanting to break into your home. Burglars like to work in the dark and don’t want to be seen at night so by illuminating the external area around your property they will move on elsewhere.

Choose lighting that employs a PIR motion detector sensor so that it will switch the light on when movement is detected. Some lighting has a handy override feature to allow the light to stay permanently on and is useful if you need a light outside your property for a length of time.

If you want to be really secure then look into driveway alarm systems and perimeter alarms. These will trigger an alarm – either a loud siren or silent alarm – so you can be alerted if someone trespasses onto your land.

Finally, closed circuit TV cameras (CCTV) are a popular favorite at monitoring the external of your building as you can record all activity going to and from your home. These systems are so much cheaper then they once were and far more sophisticated allowing you to view your images anywhere on the internet, from a remote location. This is great for watching over your property while at work or on vacation.
