Improve Your Home Security – For Free!

Everyone should consider improving their home security and the most effective way to achieve this is to buy and install a home security system. However, such alarm systems can be expensive and until you have the finances available to purchase one there are alternative and highly effective ways to improve your home security – for no cost at all!

For those on a budget it is still possible to make your home safer without spending virtually any money. You need to make your property seem as awkward as possible to break into – the burglar will then move on. Burglars like an easy target, so what steps are necessary to it difficult and less attractive to break into?

Keep garden or yard sheds securely locked. Fit secure locks if you haven't already. People keep DIY tools, garden tools and ladders in sheds which are all useful implements to break into your house with. The burglar travels light and will not be seen carrying any of these items for fear of being “caught in the act”. Don't make their life easier by leaving shed doors open or easy to break into.

Don't allow the burglar to hide whilst he attempts his break-in so trim back all those overgrown shrubs and bushes from doors and walkways.

Keep up to date on the exterior appearance of your house – a shabby appearance may indicate you are not at home very often or that you don't care enough to worry about your home. Maintain your lawn frequently and regularly mow it.

As burglars often attempt a break-in through a window, make it very difficult by planting thorny, prickly bushes underneath your windows. Burglars need to enter and exit as quickly as possible when burgling a house – this will give them second thoughts.

When you make an expensive purchase such as a new TV or stereo hi-fi don't put the packaging by the roadside advertising your new purchase. Break down the box and hide it in your trash bin.

Way too often people leave a spare key under the doormat or in a nearby plant pot. Burglars check these places too! Leave a spare key with a trusted friend or neighbor.

Although your main house doors and windows may be secure – how secure is your garage door? If your garage adjoins your house then be mindful of how easy it could be for a burglar to break into your house via your garage.

Home security can be achieved with a degree of common sense and sensible thinking – which doesn't cost anything. Simply convince a burglar that your house is not an easy target and they will move on.
