Improving Your Home Security
We should all think about improving our home security. Its one of those things that
we keep putting off as 'it will never happen to me'. Believe me, just don’t take
the risk and now is the time to revise your home security.
You should take a lot of time in considering the various options there are and what
is best suited to you and your property. There are many ways to improve your home
security and the following details some of these methods.
Consider installing
window security locks
on all of your windows. Go for window locks that lock with a key as these are more
secure. Consider quality locks that are visible from the outside – this will put
off the would-be burglar. Only install window locks that allow you to open your
windows around 4 or 5 inches. Any wider and a burglar can climb in when you are
not looking or if you forget to shut your windows when you go out.
Assess your doors. How secure are they? Could a burglar get in if they bumped them
open? You should look into installing
deadbolt door locks
for piece of mind and security. A standard door knob does not provide adequate security
so fitting deadbolt door locks will drastically reduce the chance of forced entry.
Exterior security lighting
is another cost effective and visual security device which is often overlooked.
A popular choice is to install external lighting with PIR sensors that switch on
the lighting when movement is detected.
The next step in improving your home security is to fit
CCTV security cameras
to either the outside (or/and inside) of your property. They are an excellent visual
deterrent and used together with warning signs will make a burglar think twice about
attempting to enter your property. They are not as difficult to install as you may
think and keen DIY’ers often go for wireless security cameras as they are straight
forward to install and these days, very reliable. There are many options to suit
your needs and budget from simple systems that transmit signals to be viewed via
your TV set to systems that can store images on terabytes of disks. Some systems
can even allow you to view the images from your cameras from remote locations, anywhere
in the world. You can even view the images via handheld mobile devices.
The final item to consider in protecting your home is a
burglar alarm system.
System generally comprise of a control panel (to arm/disarm etc..), siren, PIR movement
detectors, magnetic door/window sensors, window shock sensors and smoke detectors.
Again, wireless systems are often the choice of DIY’ers due to ease of installation.
These systems are not as expensive as your may imagine and could save the pain and
heartache of having your valuables and personal possessions stolen.
