Yard Security Lights
Yard security lighting is often used in combination with a PIR (Passive Infrared)
motion detector to illuminate dark areas of your yard. When a burglar comes into
the vicinity of the outdoor yard security lighting the motion detector will be triggered.
Do an assessment of your yard and determine where the darkest, most vulnerable regions
of your yard are an illuminate these areas where possible.
Install these lights at least 8 feet above the ground so they are more difficult
to disable. Install your motion detector yard lights so they light all doors and
windows. Doors, since they are the preferred entry point, should be the first priority
to illuminate, followed by windows. Some yard lighting comes with adjustable timers
so that you can have them switch on/off at set periods of time in the evening.
As well as deterring burglars, a PIR yard security light also offers a welcome light
when returning home at night by lighting key entrances to your home. These type
of security lights often include a dusk setting to prevent the lights switching
on in the day. The sensitivity of the PIR sensor and the amount of time the light
stays on is normally adjustable. On some lighting you can also adjust the dusk setting
to determine exactly how dark the garden is before the light is activated.
